About Us
The St. Augustine chapter of The Sons of the American Revolution
Honoring the Spirit of Liberty in St. Augustine
The St. Augustine Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) is dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of our patriot ancestors who fought for American independence. As the nation’s oldest continually inhabited European settlement, St. Augustine holds a unique place in history, and our chapter celebrates this rich heritage by fostering education, patriotism, and historic preservation.

Our Heritage
St. Augustine’s ties to the American Revolution are significant despite Florida being under British control during the conflict. From the Loyalist refugees who sought safety here to the establishment of Fort Tonyn and other key sites, the city was deeply intertwined with the Revolutionary War’s Southern Theater. After the fall of Charleston, South Carolina, in 1780, many high-ranking civilian patriots were imprisoned either in the Castillo de San Marcos or held in the City of Saint Augustine.
British East Florida repelled American invasions in 1776, 1777, and 1778. Homes and farms were lost, and people suffered. The population endured privations from continuous cattle raiding along the border with Georgia. The final naval battle of the American Revolution was fought off the shores of British East Florida on March 10, 1783.
Our chapter proudly illuminates these lesser-known aspects of our shared history.
